When can I start teaching my child?
As a parent you started teaching your children as soon as you started interacting with them. Most likely you taught your children self care and hygiene (for example: teeth brushing, potty training, and washing hands) Teaching your child these skills came naturally, continue to teach your child developmental skills. You do not need to interact with the Department of Education until your child is of age to be registered for school.
Does my child need to be registered as a homeschooler?
Your child MUST be registered for school by the year they will be 6 years old on February 1st. If your child is 5 at the beginning of the school year, but will turn 6 before February 1st of that school year, then they must be registered for school. You can use the chart below to determine what year your young child will need to be registered for school.
- What year will your child be 6 years old on February 1st?
- Check to see if your child’s birthdate is in the Date of Birth Range listed.
- Register your child within 30 days of the beginning of the school year listed.

What are my legal responsibilities as a homeschool parent?
- Submit your notice of intent.
- Maintain a portfolio for each child.
- If necessary, Make your portfolio “available for inspection by superintendent or the superintendent’s agent, upon 15 days’ written notice.”
- Submit an annual evaluation each year on or before the anniversary of your letter of intent.
